Hard to say--Fignon finished 18:52 back that day and only his teammate Garde had the same time. There was a group of 27 four minutes ahead of him, a pair of cyclists almost two minutes behind him and another large group of 54 cyclists almost four behind Fignon. So here's my guess, and it's only a guess. Fignon was a champion--he likely tried to stay with the lead group and cracked, so he was probably falling back on this frame. You can see the large group coming up on him--that could be the large group that ended up finishing at 14:49 and yes, that would include Rominger and his teammates Valerio Tebaldi and Ennio Vanotti. Why he's by himself is a mystery, if it's him. Hard to say though, with these old VHS tapes. Here are the detailed results of that stage. I was just thinking--I started racing in May 1988 and the oldest public record I can find of any of the races I've ever done are from 1991, a 60,000 person run I did. Anything else depends on my person records. This Tour de France was 36 years ago and yet, I can find the finishing times of every single cyclist! @EMC2Scotia a lot of folks say he doped. EPO became popular about three years after this. I liked Rominger because I resented Indurain for beating LeMond and Rominger was the one I think could've beaten Indurain in '93.

@@yesroh I hear you, for sure. Rominger psyched himself out after the breakthrough of '93 and found the TDF just a bridge too far. Riis ended up doing what he had spent 3 years trying to do.
